Don't Get Stuck - Let's Get Your Spine Truly Moving!

Hello everyone

Welcome back, my readers! I took the summer off blogging for important personal things like moving house, adjusting to a new marital status of separated-ness, and having major surgery, all within a short space of time. Those of you who know me, I don’t do by half-measures, oh no. But it works for me.

But I have been keeping up with work, seeing a lot of 1-1 clients over summer.

Now I am back and ready to rock-and-roll onwards with a renewed sense of purpose in life and work.

Truth be told - I was feeling slightly stuck for a period of time, feeling a bit insecure about the future.

Then I came out of it as I have many tools to help bring about positive change.

And I know, from my past personal experience and deep conviction borne out of past suffering and past successes overcoming my own challenges, that we can turn around almost any situation. It is all about the mindset.

But just how many of us experience this sense of “stuck-ed-ness” for long periods of time? Potentially self-sabotaging, or suffering under-confidence, with the inability to come out the downward spiral… where holding on to what is so well known is the only thing left - EVEN if it does not really work anymore?

And that can take many forms - all individual to us. Do any sound familiar?

  • sticking with the same life or exercise routine no matter what;

  • staying within the same social group, even if the people surrounding us do not make us happy;

  • avoiding socialising altogether, even knowing we become progressively more isolated;

  • holding on to the same beliefs about why we have pain, avoiding something that seems to cause it, becoming more and more immobile and fearful;

  • keeping with the same approach of regular visits to someone like a massage therapist or chiropractor to “keep on top of the pain” even if it comes back again and again?

And many, many more.

*I am not knocking fellow professionals, by the way, as they do an amazing job*

However, pardon me being blunt, but the definition of insanity is to expect different outputs - if we keep putting the same inputs in.

So my question to you is, if you are suffering a form of physical or emotional pain, what are you currently doing that is no longer serving you, and what can you be doing differently if you realise that you have been STUCK?

I have worked with some wonderful people these past few months. People who are reaping the best rewards are those who are looking at their health and saying “is there an even better way of doing this?”

Like an amazing lady who is now out of decades of chronic pain because she questionned full dependency on her walker post a nasty fall. And she is now reducing her reliance on it and getting stronger and stronger by the week. We have done both physical and emotional work to help her along the way.

Like an fantastic gentleman who, in spite of potential nerve damage post his hip replacement, is working to gradually and safely reduce his weight, and has been taking regular sessions to build up his stamina.

Like a brave lady who is confronting the stress that her body is experiencing when she worries about her family, resulting in greater painful physical sensations. We have done both emotional and physical work to reduce this reactivity.

I will leave you with some images of the difference in spine mobility that can be achieved - sometimes within just one session.

This is a change in spinal extension (doing an arched back - a back bend) in just 1 week. Notice how the hips aer happy shifting forwards, the neck does not over-arch, and the spine moves more freely at multiple levels.

This is a change in spinal flexion achieved over 3 months after years of chronic pain. Notice how much deeper the forward bend is, there is more of a hip shift backwards, and much more movement through the lower back.

Both of these changes show that the spine is now more ready to move in a smooth, “segmented” way with a little bit of movement through each level.

From the physical perspective, I achieve these changes by applying Neuro-kinetic therapy - analysing what is underworking, what is overworking, correcting this, and then prescribing targeted exercises to unwind long-standing patterns.

From the emotional perspective, I use Integrated Eye Movement therapy to reduce emotional triggers, and I can also use hypnotherapy.

A lot of people like to then reinforce this with Pilates or Yoga, which works very well when compensatory patterns are addressed and UNWOUND first.

We do this analysis and initial correctives during the first assessment session.
